Not your grandmothers pearls: let's talk Milia

Milia, also called whiteheads, or milk spots; are whitish, pearl-like clusters of sebum and dead cells that collect under the surface of the skin composed of keratin. There is no opening in these benign cysts, as the skin hardens and closes over. Milia is typically found around the eyes, cheeks, nose, and forehead region and occurs commonly in dry skin types but can occur in any skin type and condition. Commonly, milia may develope post skin trauma, such as laser resurfacing and UV radiation. Genetics also can play a role in milia as well as use of heavy oil based creams. Rosacea skin types and those that are more prone to redness may also be at a higher risk for developing milia as well as prolonged use of corticosteroids. It is recommended to seek a skin care professional and not try and extract these yourself as you would tradtional acne. Many dermatologist refuse to touch milia and most often refer patients out to an aesthetician. How to prevent and get rid of milia safely working in combination your skin care provider and having a good at home regimen, will help decrease these immensely. Don't use abrasive cleansers or scrubs on the skin. It's highly recommended to use a professional skin care line with "active" ingredients. Active ingredients or "performance ingredients," are what cause change in the skin to occur and can speed up the cell renewal process. Using a RetinA cream at night may be recommended if tolerated by the skin. RetinA allows the dead cells to sluff off more quickly. Remember to cleanse both a.m. and p.m. as leaving makeup on will clog the pores and trap oil under the skin. And as always wear an SPF of a minimum of 30 during the day. Depending upon how long the milia have been present and how saturated the skin, more than one treatment may be required and monthly facials are always recommended. When I worked dermatology I was known as the milia specialist when it came to removal. Booking an appointment is easy and consultations are always free of charge.
